Scholarships
AWN SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Each year AWN awards scholarships to deserving students from the top 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle. A “student” is not limited to a recent high school graduate. A student may also be any woman who is entering college for the first time or perhaps returning to finish a degree or obtain an advanced degree. Scholarships are awarded annually for use the following school year (fall and spring semesters). The number and amount of scholarships are based on available funds.
NANCY SAMPLE GARMS SCHOLARSHIP
The Nancy Sample Garms Scholarship was established in 1995 by her family to honor her memory after her untimely death in 1994. Nancy was a longtime civic leader and court master for the Ninth Administrative Judicial Region of Texas. She had been a teacher and counselor with the Amarillo Independent School District and Amarillo College before graduating from Texas Tech School of Law. She was an adjunct professor at West Texas A&M University and wrote guest columns for the Globe-Times.
Her good friend, Beth Duke, wrote “She achieved her goal of completing law school only after convincing the admissions department that an older student with dependent children would be a good risk. Armed with her degree, she returned to Amarillo and invested herself in making Amarillo a better place to live.”
In her last article for the Globe-Times, Nancy wrote about “doing something” rather than “just being somebody”. Her friends say she lived her words: “No one attains value or respect by mere existence on Earth. No fair squandering your resources, your talents, your essence in effort to be somebody. There is only time to do all of life – to do things of consequence!”
A patchwork of scholarships helped her complete her education. For that reason, this scholarship is for women who would benefit from or have participated in the AWN Mentor Program. Women who are single parents and married women who are attempting to complete their education will be given special consideration.
